Istio is commonly seen as only being useful for complex, container-based microservice architectures. In this session we will walk through all the ways that Istio can help application developers and operators, while clearing up some of the common misconceptions about Istio.

Istio Enables loads of telemetry out-of-the-box, and the sheer amount of data can be overwhelming. This talk will focus on using Istio's observability to empower high availability, low effort operations. Get the most out of your service mesh with Istio!

This presentation covers how traffic flow is managed by service mesh and will focus on three aspects of request flows. First, we will look at how east-west traffic (service to service requests inside the mesh) flow works in a single or multi-cluster architecture. Second, we will discuss how service mesh manages north-south traffic (ingress and egress) flows using Gateway and VirtualService custom resources in a single and multi-cluster architecture. And lastly, covering how traffic flows from services running inside the mesh to services running outside of the mesh using ServiceEntrys. The presentation covers how to validate and monitor the data plane configuration to ensure your mesh is working as intended.

This talk will discuss the work Istio has done with the Kubernetes to standardize APIs and functionality we depend on.
